I recently went one-on-one with Sunny Beutler, CEO of Sunrider International
Adam: Thanks again for taking the time to share your advice. First things first, though, I am sure readers would love to learn more about you. How did you get here? What experiences, failures, setbacks, or challenges have been most instrumental to your growth?
Sunny: I grew up immersed in Sunrider, watching my parents build the company from the ground up as immigrants in the U.S. Their determination and passion for this business and helping people left a lasting impression on me. Our family vacations were centered on Sunrider events and conventions, our afternoons after summer school every year involved working at Sunrider stuffing envelopes and answering phone calls, and we learned from a young age that we could help a lot of people through Sunrider. Before becoming CEO, I trained as a lawyer and gained experience in international markets, which sharpened my analytical, problem-solving, and leadership skills.
Taking over as CEO in 2021 during the pandemic was a big step, but having the support of the managers, my siblings, and my parents as mentors made the transition collaborative and natural. Every challenge, from moving our manufacturing facility to supply chain issues during the pandemic, taught me to stay agile, think creatively, and keep our vision front and center.
Adam: In your experience, what are the key steps to growing and scaling your business?
Sunny: The foundation is always your people and your products. Make sure you have a team you trust, give them clear goals, and let them contribute their expertise. Then focus on systems and processes that can scale, stay open to innovation, and don’t be afraid to adapt when things change. Growth is as much about flexibility and learning as it is about strategy.
For Sunrider, growing and scaling also included building a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Texas, which ensures our products remain high-quality and competitive for decades to come.
Adam: What are your best tips on the topics of marketing and branding?
Sunny: Be authentic and consistent. Your brand should reflect your mission, your values, and the story you want people to connect with. Listen to your customers and stay aware of trends, but don’t chase every fad. Focus on what makes your company unique.
Our recent brand refresh is a good example. We modernized our packaging while staying true to Sunrider’s essence: natural ingredients, ancient Eastern herbal traditions, and modern science. The updated designs make it easier for people to understand and connect with our products. When you stay true to who you are and remain in tune with your audience, your brand builds trust and resonates over time.
Adam: What do you believe are the defining qualities of an effective leader?
Sunny: Collaboration, decisiveness, and the ability to listen. A great leader inspires trust, communicates a clear vision, and empowers others to succeed. You also need humility: the willingness to learn from your team and admit when you don’t have all the answers.
Adam: How can leaders and aspiring leaders take their leadership skills to the next level?
Sunny: Step outside your comfort zone and seek feedback constantly. Lead by example, embrace challenges, and invest in developing others. Leadership isn’t just about directing; it’s about creating an environment where people feel supported and inspired to give their best.
Adam: What are your three best tips applicable to entrepreneurs, executives, and civic leaders
Sunny: First, focus on people. Your team is your greatest asset. Second, have a clear vision and stick with it, but be flexible in how you get there. Third, never stop learning. The world changes fast, and staying curious and open-minded is what keeps you ahead.
Adam: What is your best advice on building, leading, and managing teams?
Sunny: My best advice is to hire people who are smarter than you in their areas of expertise and trust them. Encourage collaboration, communicate clearly, and give credit where it’s due. A strong team thrives when people feel valued and empowered to do their best work.
Adam: What is the single best piece of advice you have ever received?
Sunny: The best advice really comes from both of my parents. They taught me that although studying and grades were important, they’re not everything. Our mission is to help other people, and we need to use our creativity and passion in addition to our intellect to bring about a positive impact on others’ lives.
Adam: Is there anything else you would like to share?
Sunny: I’m grateful every day for the team we’ve built, our IBOs around the world, and the opportunity to carry forward my parents’ vision while adding my own perspective. Leading Sunrider is a huge responsibility, but it’s also incredibly rewarding to see the impact we have on people’s health, wellness, and lives globally.
